Breath by Breath Sangha

Inmates at Marion Correctional Institution have formed a Buddhist sangha called “Breath by Breath.”  MCI is a prison for male inmates, operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, located approximately 50 miles north of Columbus. Most inmates in the institution are medium-security inmates, with many-year or life sentences. Some members of the sangha are new to Buddhist practice, while others have been practicing for many years. MCI has a reputation for being relatively safe, as an unusually good prison for inmate programs,  and for humane treatment of inmates (or “offenders” as they are most commonly referred to within the institution). In some ways, MCI is like a monastery; in some ways more like a hell world.
